Three people were killed when their vehicle collided with a train at a level crossing in Perseverance in Port Elizabeth on Friday morning.
Provincial transport department spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, said the vehicle was dragged along for several metres, before the train, came to a halt.
He said all three occupants, two women and a man, died on the scene.
Binqose says three Prasa employees on the train were not hurt but treated on the scene for trauma.
An inquest docket has been opened.
Police spokesperson Captain Gerda Swart says the circumstances surrounding the accident is not clear at this stage and it is under investigation.
The names of the deceased will be released after their next-of-kin are informed.
