Gqeberha police have arrested three suspects and confiscated abalone worth approximately R500 000 in Lorraine.
Spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says members attached to the Anti-gang unit, Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit and the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment executed a search warrant at a residence on Thursday after they obtained information regarding abalone activities at a townhouse in Longwy Avenue.
She says they found the abalone in large fridges.
Janse van Rensburg says a total of 4 079 units of wet abalone were confiscated.
The suspects, aged between 32 and 49, are being detained on charges including the contravention of the Marine Living Resource Act, and the illegal possession of abalone.
They will appear in the Gqeberha Magistrate's Court on Monday.
