Nelson Mandela University hosted the unveiling of the “world’s Hugest Happiness Blanket” to mark the United Nations International Day of Happiness.

The unveiling of the giant blanket on Thursday by the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Bay movement, took place on the lawn of the university’s second avenue campus.

It was accompanied by artistic and musical performances from the legendary singer PJ Powers, NMU choir, Quintessentials Acapella Group, Toynbee ballet academy, and the Lawson Brown Steel Band.

Monique Hellenberg and Tim Moloi also “brought their musical magic to the celebration, while renowned artist Muneeb Wassin captured the essence of giving with a live painting created on-site.”

According to a statement, the blankets were “meticulously stitched together” by South African KnitWits, with a massive yellow smiley emoji as its centrepiece.

The founder of 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day, Carolyn Steyn, said it was particularly meaningful to bring the event to the Eastern Cape, Madiba’s birthplace, where she said his legacy of service and kindness continues to inspire us all.

Other dignitaries who delivered messages at the event included the deputy minister of defence and military veterans, Bantu Holomisa, and deputy vice-chancellor, Professor Andre Keet.

According to the statement, a quarter of the blankets have remained in Gqeberha, with special distributions taking place across the Eastern Cape.

These include deliveries to Bethsaida Ministry in Nieu-Bethesda, Paterson High School, Missionvale Care Centre, Umphanda Foundation for Autism, and Ekuphumleni Elderly Home.
