Three arrested following cash-in-transit heist in Fort Beaufort

Three men aged between 29 and 34 are expected to appear in the Fort Beaufort Magistrate's court on Friday after they were arrested in connection with a cash in transit heist at the town.

Captain Anelisa Feni of the Hawks in the Eastern Cape, says three men accosted and disarmed a Fidelity security guard shortly before midday on Tuesday while he was loading cash into an ATM at a Superspar in Fort Beaufort.

The three gunmen took an undisclosed amount of cash and fled the scene in a getaway vehicle parked nearby.

Captain Feni says members of the Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit of the Hawks and Fort Beaufort police immediately started searching for the suspects.

Less than four hours after the incident, their investigation led them to Mdeni Village at Fort Beaufort where the three men were arrested.

Police members also recovered four pistols, including the Fidelity-issue firearm and a portion of the stolen money.

Meanwhile, Captain Feni confirmed to AlgoaFM news that a suspect had been arrested and was under police guard in hospital following an armed robbery at a shopping Mall in Alice on Saturday in which a Border Cricket Coach was shot and killed.

Border cricket service manager Deon Muller said Siviwe Hlatuka, the Alice Regional Performance Centre Head Cricket Coach, was unfortunately at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Muller said his commitment and loyalty to the Alice Region would be a big loss.

Captain Feni said it appears that the suspect was wounded in the exchange of gunfire in which Hlatuka was killed - but had been able to flee with his accomplices in a getaway vehicle.

Police followed up on information and arrested the suspect at a clinic in Dimbaza, where he was about to be transferred to Frere Hospital in East London.

His accomplices are still at large.
