Three men, aged between 32 and 34, who attempted to assist a suspect to escape from a Grahamstown hospital where he was admitted with gunshot wounds on Friday, were arrested in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Police captain Mali Govender says the suspects were being sought for several serious cases including, Armed Robbery, Hijacking and Murder in the Eastern Cape.
Two pistols, a Norinco and a Beretta , two magazines and 23 rounds of ammunition were seized.
She says an investigation revealed that the gunshot victim, who's in his mid-twenties, is a suspect in several serious cases - the most recent being an armed robbery in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth, which took place on Wednesday evening.
Five men, between the ages of 18 and 22, were arrested the same evening on charges of Armed Robbery, Attempted Murder and Possession of an unlicenced firearm and ammunition.
Govender says the gunshot victim is currently under police guard in a stable condition, and faces a charge of armed robbery.
