Energy Minister Tina Joemat-Petterssen says thousands of workers at different skills levels will be employed during the construction of Nuclear 1, a project that will take at least 10 years to complete.
Nuclear 1 is expected to be constructed at Thyspunt near Oyster Bay, although the Minister says this is only one of three sites taken through the detailed phase of the environmental impact assessment process.
Replying to a question in parliament from ANC MP, Lulu Johnson, the Minister said as soon as a final decision was taken on nuclear energy, a nuclear licensing process of the site by the National Nuclear Regulator would start.
Joemat-Pettersen said this process may take another 2-3 years before construction takes place.
