Thousands of water meters will be installed in Knysna next month as part of the Municipalities efforts to save water and enhance revenue.
The water management devices will be installed in seven wards of the Greater Knysna area.
The project will start on the 11th of March and will take about four months to complete.
The Chairperson for Technical Services Councillor Leval Davis says water meters have been a great success in the Western Cape and have already been rolled out in the Cape Town Metro, Theewaterskloof and the Mossel Bay area with great success.
According to the municipality, the meters will have several advantages not only for them but also for the consumers
The water management devices will be programmed to provide a daily allocation of 200 litres per day and savings will accumulate if not used only on monthly basis. After this allotted amount the device will automatically switch on the prepaid system.
Households are being encouraged to conserve usage and explore advantages of grey water use for things such as gardening.
The contractor will also be employing approximately 50 people within the Greater Knysna area.
