Transnet says that an estimated 717 700 vehicles will go through South African ports by 2020.
Installed capacity at the ports currently allows Transnet to handle 580 000 units a year.
Port Elizabeth is earmarked as the major automotive port once the tank farm and manganese facility have been relocated to the Coega Industrial Development Zone.
In its Integrated Report for 2013, Transnet confirms that in terms of its Market Demand Strategy, the company will spend R32.7 billion in the Southern Corridor that takes in Port Elizabeth, East London and the Port of Ngqura.
Of this amount, R19 billion will be spent on increasing the manganese export capacity through the Port of Ngqura to 16 million tonnes a year.
Transnet will also spend R5.8 billion to extend the breakwater, entrance channel keys and services in East London.
