Thousands of police deployed in EC for elections

The management of the police in the Eastern Cape says it has deployed more than 10 000 officers throughout the province for this week's General Election.

The Provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Celiwe Binta, says the SAPS will ensure that voting will take place safely at the 4,615 polling stations in the Eastern Cape.

Binta says they have completed their operational plan months ago and have started deploying police members over the weekend.

Without referring to any particular place, Binta said in a statement over the weekend that all hot spot areas will be very closely monitored, and additional forces would be on standby.

She added that police had ensured the presence of additional manpower and reserve forces, to deal with any contingency or crisis which might require intervention.

Binta emphasised that no form of criminal activity, intimidation, disruptive behaviour, or drunkenness would be tolerated.
