The police in Port Elizabeth have destroyed a total of 3 898 firearms, two of which had been forfeited to the state.
The SAPS said one 1 898 of the fire-arms had been surrendered voluntarily to the police in terms of the Firearms Control Act.
All these firearms were handguns.
A police spokesperson says the destruction of firearms represents a major step in the SAPS efforts to creating a safer and secure environment.
Nearly 48 000 firearms have been destroyed by the SAPS in the Eastern Cape since 2004.
