More than 4 000 people have received the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine over the past two days in the Eastern Cape.

The Department of Health said it is pleased with the turn-out since phase two of the vaccination roll-out was started on Monday.

Spokesperson, Sizwe Kupelo said that the process has been running smoothly so far and there have been no glitches reported.

"The vaccination campaign in the Eastern Cape is going smoothly, the department is pleased with the processes and there no glitches that have been experienced. Up to so far since we started on Monday we have vaccinated 4 700 elderly people," he said.

Kupelo appealed to the elderly to visit their nearest clinics to get vaccinated even if the SMS notification directs them to another site.

On Tuesday there was only one hiccup when 1 200 people showed up to receive the first jab of the Pfizer vaccine at Provincial Hospital in Gqeberha.

Just under a thousand people had to be turned away since the hospital can only vaccinate up to 250 per day.

A listener told Algoa FM News that she stood in the queue for over an hour but eventually received her first jab.

Residents who received SMS's were given preference in the queue as there were many who just showed up hoping to get vaccinated.

Sizwe said this was a Covid-19 precautionary measure due to the growing number of active cases in Gqeberha.

Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor, Nqaba Bhanga warned that the Metro could experience the third wave if the situation doesn't change.

The latest statistics from the Metro indicated that there were 194 active cases.

Residents have been urged to continue wearing a mask, sanitise regularly and more importantly to avoid large gatherings which have been identified as super spreaders.
