Thirteen people were injured, one critically, after a taxi and a car were involved in a high impact collision in Despatch.
Netcare 911 says while the exact cause of the accident will be the subject of further investigation, paramedics found that the taxi had collided into the side of the car.
Spokesperson, Chris Botha, says paramedics described a scene of carnage with the twisted remains of the vehicles and accident debris was spread over a large area.
Some of the injured were still trapped in the wreckage. After triaging the injured it was established that one person was critically injured while twelve taxi commuters escaped with injuries ranging from serious to minor.
While rescuers used the Jaws of Life to free the critically injured female paramedics clambered into the vehicle to stabilise her. After the patient was extricated and skilfully immobilised on a trauma board paramedics transported her and the other twelve injured to nearby hospitals for the care that they required.
