Third person dies after Soweto mayhem

JOHANNESBURG, August 30 (ANA) - Police on Thursday said a third person had succumbed to injuries related to the violence in Soweto in which residents raided foreign-owned spaza shops and looted groceries.

The foreign nationals, some of them from Pakistan and Somalia, are accused of selling expired and fake goods.

On Wednesday two people died - one was shot and another stabbed to death in the violence that erupted in different parts of Soweto.

"The last person died late last night in hospital. A suspect was arrested for murder. Two were arrested for illegal possession firearms. Three firearms have been confiscated from the suspects," said Gauteng police spokesperson Lungelo Dlamini, adding that as many as 27 suspects had been arrested.

Dlamini said Soweto was calm but tense on Thursday with police deployed in numbers.
