The Department of Correctional Service said has confirmed the death of a third inmate at East London Correctional Centre.
Spokesperson, Singabhako Nxumalo, said the death of a 50-year-old man on 20 May, was confirmed to be Covid19 related, with respiratory failure cited as the cause of death.
Meanwhile, he said the number of positive Covid19 cases at Eastern Cape Correctional Centres is 489, comprising 413 inmates and 76 officials.
He said there were 72 recoveries in the province.
Nxumalo said that the total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases within the Department of Correctional Services countrywide is at 719 that include 246 officials and 473 inmates.
