Disaster relief organisation, Gift of Givers says in spite of the mounting challenges in the face of no rain and limited functional water treatment plants, it is optimistic that it will achieve a substantial measure of success in assisting Makhanda with its water woes.
Founder, Dr Imtiaz Sooliman says in a statement that their third active borehole at Settler's Monument yielded water on Friday.
He says two of the city's dams have only 20 days of water left.
Sooliman says depending on funding availability, Gift of the Givers will bring in more drilling machines in the race to secure water for Makhanda.
The first of a three plan exploratory borehole project, capable of supplying up to 400 thousand litres of water per day to Rhodes University was officially handed over on 24 February.
Last month, the Makana Local Municipality gave the green light to the organisation to start drilling boreholes as a medium-term solution to the city's water crisis.
