Gqeberha Police have urged residents to take responsibility for their safety and property.
This is after suspects broke into a vehicle in Central while the driver was passed out.
Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says late on Tuesday night, Humewood Police arrested six suspects found in possession of property allegedly stolen out of the complainant's car.
She says it is alleged that police spotted a person walking on Lawrence Street in Central with two 6 packs of beer in his possession.
On questioning the male, he offered various explanations as to the possession which were followed up by police and confirmed to be lies.
Colonel Naidu says further investigations led police to Bird Street where they found the driver asleep with the back window, broken.
They woke up the driver who was oblivious to the break-in.
Colonel Naidu says alcohol, clothing and a large amount of cash were stolen from the vehicle.
She says the investigation led them to an accommodation in Pearson Street where five occupants were found in possession of stolen goods that the complainant identified.
Colonel Naidu says the three men and two women, aged between 28 and 36 were detained on charges of theft out of a motor vehicle and possession of suspected stolen property.
They are expected to appear in court soon.
Police urged residents to ensure they have transport home after drinking to avoid situations where they pull over to sleep because they are too drunk to drive.
