Diaz Beach in Mossel Bay will remain closed until further notice after four pygmy sperm whales washed up on shore.
The Mossel Bay Municipality says three adults and one calf had washed up on the beach late on Tuesday afternoon.
An environmental team from Mossel Bay was hoping to rescue to mammals but sadly two died from stress while two others had to be euthanized.
The Department of Forestry Fisheries and Environmental Affairs (DFFA) will be doing a necropsy on Wednesday morning before the carcasses will be buried.
Bathers are also warned that there could be an increase in shark activity.
