Finweek deputy editor, Tandisizwe Mahlutshana, says the Africa Cup of Nations football tournament has come at a cost of R461m.
He told the Daron Mann Breakfast on AlgoaFM on Thursday morning that this was the amount the Finance minister had to 'hustle up' and make available for South Africa to host the event.
He said a Finweek investigation had shown that the Confederation of African Football had pitched in with R48m and there had also been a sponsorship element.
However, each metro hosting matches had ultimately had to fork out a sizeable amount of money.
"Each host city had to still for out a couple of millions to host the tournament, for example Nelson Mandela Bay had to fork out R19m" Mahlutshana said.
