Ten years added to the jail time of AWB bomber

The AWB member Abraham Myburgh was sentenced to ten years imprisonment in the Port Elizabeth Regional Court on Thursday afternoon, for a murder he committed 16 years ago.

Myburg pleaded guilty to the murder of Sanet de Wet, who was smothered on a farm in the Patensie area 16 years ago, where he and other AWB members had been hiding after escaping from prison.

At the time Myburgh had been serving a life sentence for a series of bombings in which more than 20 people were killed.

De Wet's husband, Jan, is also serving 25 years for his role in the right-wing bombing campaign before the 1994 elections.

In his plea statement, Myburg said that Sanet had been killed because they feared that she would expose their hideout to the police.

Meanwhile, Myburg's wife, Irene, who married him while he was in hiding, says her husband regrets his past actions.

Irene Myburg told Algoa FM News during a break in court proceedings that they were very young at the time and had succummed to severe peer pressure.

She says she wants to warn young South Africans not to give in to peer pressure.

Irene says her husband decided three years ago to come forward and confess to De Wet's murder as he wanted to make a clean break with the past.

She says he's involved in a vegetable project in jail, where produce from the Zondewater prison is sold to local supermarkets.

Irene says they remain committed to South Africa.
