Ten people have died after two shacks burnt to the ground in the Eastern Cape.
The two separate fires were reported in the Buffalo City Metro (BCM) and Nelson Mandela Bay Metro respectively.
Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says the fire in BCM happened in the early hours of Friday morning in the Ndevana informal settlement near eQonce.
She says a 40-year-old mother and her three children, aged between three and 10 died in the blaze after neighbours could not extinguish the fire.
Colonel Naidu says the second fire claimed the lives of six family members whose home in Missionvale caught fire in the early hours of Sunday morning.
She says it is alleged that two adults and four children died in the blaze but their names and ages are unknown.
Colonel Naidu says it is suspected that the cause of the fire may have been as a result of an illegal electricity connection, however, the exact cause will be determined by the fire department.
Inquest dockets have been opened in both investigations.
