EC cops make breakthrough in hit-murder syndicate investigation

Police in Nelson Mandela Bay have arrested seven suspects allegedly involved in a series of hit murders linked to insurance payouts.

Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says after 10 months of intense investigations police secured warrants of arrest to execute a well-coordinated operation.

She says the suspects were arrested yesterday and during the early hours of this morning at their homes in Kwanobuhle and Despatch.

Colonel Naidu says the team was assisted by the Queenstown Murder and Robbery and Cradock Commercial Crimes Investigation unit which linked the syndicate to numerous murders.

She says the suspects were connected to the murders through ballistic linkages and insurance policies.

The hit-style murders took place in Kwadwesi, Kwanobuhle, Despatch, Whittlesea and Kamesh.

Six suspects were arrested at their homes while a seventh suspect was traced to the St Albans Correctional Centre where he is facing a charge of the illegal possession of a firearm.

Colonel Naidu says they are facing 11 murder charges as well as racketeering and fraud related to several claims that were submitted on the deceased.

She says during the raid police also confiscated a firearm, three magazines and 95 live rounds of ammunition.

The men aged between 40 and 52 are expected to appear in the Kariega Magistrates Court on Monday.
