Ten people were killed on Eastern Cape roads on Monday as the country moved to Lockdown Level 3.
A spokesperson for the Department of traffic Unathi Binqose says eight of the fatalities were pedestrians.
He says alcohol has been cited as a major contributing factor in most of the accidents.
Bottle stores across the country re-opened on Monday after two months of lockdown.
The accidents were scattered all across the province.
Binqose says the pedestrians were hit by vehicles on the N2 road in Mthatha, Walmer in Port Elizabeth, the R61 near Flagstaff, the King Williams Town CBD, Zibungu Village in Libode and one in Port Alfred.
He says in Coffee Bay a pedestrian died after being run over by a taxi.
In the early hours of Tuesday morning, one person died when his vehicle overturned in Idutywa while a passenger died in another accident where the vehicle he was travelling in also overturned.
Ten cases of culpable homicide are under investigation and drunk driving charges could be added in some of these cases.
