Ten people have been killed in a bus accident on the road between Butterworth and Centane.
Eastern Cape Health Department Sizwe Kupelo says the 65-seater passenger bus plunged several metres off the road earlier on Monday morning.
Rescue personal are at the scene and the army has also been called in to assist in reaching the wreckage.
Kupelo says they have identified 10 bodies so far as they were all ejected from the bus.
"We are still trying to get to the patients and identify the survivors. We've prepared beds in all hospitals around East London as well as Mthatha," he added.
A three-year-old is among those critically injured and are being airlifted to EL.
Kupelo says they are struggling to reach the wreckage and the emergency team is now talking to the Army to get more assistance
SAPS search and rescue team is also en route to the accident scene.
Meanwhile, three other people were killed in separate accidents on Monday morning.
A spokesperson for Provincial Traffic Charles Bramwell says a pedestrian was killed on the N10 near Cradock in a hit and run while two people were killed on the Ziphunzana Bypass in East London following a head-on collision.
He says another accident on the N2 at the Kei cuttings, the road had to be closed for a helicopter to land in order to airlift two seriously injured patients to a nearby hospital.
