Ten people have been killed in a motor vehicle accident on the road between Mqanduli and Xhora near Mthatha in the Eastern Cape on Tuesday.
The accident happened in Tafalehashe administrative area outside Elliotdale.
Eastern Cape Transport Department spokesperson Khuselwa Rantjie, says a bakkie carrying thirteen passengers overturned killing 10 people.
Rantjie says it is alleged that a female driver was navigating a steep road when the vehicle came to a standstill, reversing down a cliff.
She says all the victims were women who were on their way to a church gathering.
The driver and another man and woman survived the accident but sustained critical injuries.
A case of culpable homicide is under investigation.
