Telkom responds to DA sticker debacle

The ANC in the Eastern Cape has called on Telkom CEO, Sipho Maseko, to investigate why a DA sticker had been spotted on an official Telkom vehicle.

ANC provincial spokesperson, Mlibo Qoboshiyane, says they also want Telkom to explain to the public how the DA sticker ended up competing with their corporate identity on one of their own bakkies.

Qoboshiyane says the bakkie, with Gauteng registration plates, was spotted this morning on the N-2 between East London and King Williams Town and was being "driven by a white male wearing Telkom clothing."

He says unless Telkom has started an outdoor advertising division, allowing political parties to glue their promotional stickers on its fleet, the sticker has to be removed with immediate effect.

Here is Telkom's response:

"Telkom has investigated this matter and would like to report that neither the Company nor the driver of the vehicle proactively placed the Democratic Alliance sticker on the company vehicle.

As a listed company Telkom operates in a commercial environment serving the needs of all the people of South Africa, and as such does not endorse or support any single political party.

While Telkom employees are free to choose to support whichever party they want to, as is their democratic right, they may not do so using Telkom property as a platform, or associate the brand with any political party.

Telkom confirms that the sticker has been removed and will also be reminding all staff of the company position so as to avoid a repeat of this situation."

The sticker has since been removed:
