Police in Tsomo in the Eastern Cape have made a breakthrough in their investigation into the brutal attack on two elderly women on Sunday by arresting two teenagers.
Spokesperson Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana says the women aged 91 and 75 were sleeping in their home on Sunday when the suspects broke in through the window.
He says it is alleged that the suspects demanded money and then started raping them.
Brigadier Kinana says during the attack, the 75-year-old woman managed to escape to her neighbour's homestead where they called the police.
He says when police arrived they found the body of the 91-year-old woman lying outside the house.
It is not yet clear what type of weapon was used to kill her.
Brigadier Kinana says two 19-year-old suspects were arrested in a neighbouring village on Tuesday and will make their first court appearance on Thursday.
They are being charged with house robbery, rape and murder.
The circumstances surrounding the attack is still under investigation.
