Six suspects were arrested by members of the Gqeberha Flying Squad on Tuesday morning after they found abalone worth more than R1 million inside their vehicle.
Police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, said their VW Caddie drew the attention of a private anti-poaching unit after it failed to stop in Marine Drive when signalled to do so.
She said a high-speed chase ensued and the unit called for back-up from the Flying Squad who joined on the chase.
Captain Janse van Rensburg said the vehicle was driving on the wrong side of Strand Street in the CBD and was eventually stopped.
Six suspects, aged between, 21 and 51 were arrested, while eight bags of abalone with an estimated street value of R1.4 million were seized.
Their vehicle was also impounded.
Janse Van Rensburg said the men are expected to appear in court soon on charges of contravening the Marine Living Resource Act.
