Eastern Cape Safety MEC, Helen Sauls August says the issue of teenage pregnancy and drug abuse in Port Elizabeth's northern areas is a major cause for concern.
She was speaking during a visit to the Doctor's for Life Orphanage centre in Helenvale on Tuesday.
The MEC spent the last 2 days visiting schools in the Metro ahead of the start of the new school year.
Sauls August says she believes it's important to forge relationships with communities and organisations in order to address issues of drug abuse and teen pregnancy.
"Obviously the more we can forge partnerships with these kind of NGO's in our community to make sure that there is some place for our youth to take up these issues and with all the schools I have visited I must say they do have problems with kids being addicted to drugs and alcohol" Sauls August said.
