Teen mom accused of dumping baby in Knysna no longer being detained

A teenager who was arrested for abandoning her baby in Knysna made another brief appearance in the town's Magistrates Court on Thursday.

The 17-year-old who is charged with Child Neglect and abandonment was released from custody into the care of her mother.

Spokesperson Captain Malcolm Pojie says initially they were going to detain her in a place of safety but after appearing before a Magistrate she was released.

The mother, who cannot be named because she is a minor,  must be back in court on the 14th of October.

The one-week-old baby girl was found in bushes in Knysna on Monday by a passerby who alerted authorities.

Captain Pojie says they tracked down the mother the next day after checking who had recently booked in at the maternity ward at the Knysna hospital.

The teenage mom is from Plettenberg Bay.
