The problems that led to drastic measures at the Asherville Senior Secondary School in Graaff Reinet are by no means unique in the Eastern Cape.
That's the view of Democratic Alliance MPL Edmund van Vuuren.
This week the governing body blocked access to the school in a bid to highlight issues like staff shortages, lack of furniture and unsatisfactory ablution facilities.
Van Vuuren says another example is Dunsi High School in the Lusikisiki area.
"Dunsi has got 753 learners with only 7 teachers and they are leaving this school because it is a deep rural school where not teacher wants to go. The Department has never allocated any teachers since 2010" Van Vuuren said.
Other schools with severe problems include Sanctor in Port Elizabeth, and Asherville.
"They have indicated that teachers must move but they have not moved in the last 9 years and I hope that this time around that the department will take action against those teachers who have been identified to move but have refused, it is unacceptable" he added.
