A mini-bus taxi was set alight in Booysens Park in Gqeberha on Tuesday as protest action swept across several parts of Nelson Mandela Bay.

Police spokesperson, Captain Andre’ Beetge, says incidents of tyre-burning were reported at various points on the R-75 near Kwadwesi.

He says the entrance to Despatch and the Chatty Dip was still closed after 8 am.

Other incidents of tyre-burning were reported in New Brighton, Motherwell-Addo road, Booysens Park and on various parts of Standford Road closer to Booysens Park.

He says there’s a strong police presence across the Metro supported by Metro police.

Beetge has advised trucks and buses to avoid the problem areas.

At this point, no arrests have been reported.

The Nelson Mandela Bay issued a notice on Monday evening to alert residents of a possible strike and to clarify that it had nothing to do with the municipality or the Integrated Public Transport System (IPTS).
