Taxi smash claims eight lives

Eight people were killed when two mini-bus taxis collided on the R-61 between Aberdeen in the Eastern Cape and Beaufort West.

Provincial traffic spokesperson, Tsepo Machaya, says an unknown number of passengers were injured in the head-on smash.

He said the road was closed early on Friday morning to allow emergency services to remove one person still trapped in the wreckage.

The cause of the accident is not yet known.
