The Economic Freedom Fighters in the Western Cape says its taken up the cudgels on behalf of disgruntled taxi operators in the Garden Route who want to bring a halt to the Bus Rapid Transit System in George.
The 'Go George' bus service was introduced last December with the roll-out of the new bus service on new routes in the city.
However, some months later, the George Taxi Association, along with taxi operators from Oudtshoorn, Knysna, Mossel Bay and Plettenberg Bay, say they were not properly consulted and want to stop the 'Go George'.
EFF chairperson on the Western Cape, Bernard Joseph, says they will be holding public consultations on Tuesday at the Lawaaikamp Community Hall in George.
"They would like us to assist to make George ungovernable, however we have told them that we are not in the position to assist them to make George ungovernable. We would like them to take on a consultation process with the various affected communities in the different areas, and more specifically the taxi area's in George and surrounding area's" he said.
Joseph says after the meeting they will outline a process of consultation.
He told Algoa FM News that there was a certain process that was followed when government introduced the BRT process in 2007.
However, he says this changed some years later.
"There was only limited consultation and in this consultation some of the people have fell out, who were part of the process, however those that have left the current drivers behind are also experiencing problems, even thought they are abiding in the concept of "GO GEORGE". Their taxi's are standing and they are not able to provide for themselves and cannot pay the installments, and this will black list them as business people" he added.
The George Municipality is expected to comment on the issue later.
