The Western Cape Transport Department says a minibus taxi was driving at an average speed of 128km/h before it crashed near Aberdeen in the karoo, killing seven people, this week.
Spokesperson Siphesihle Dube says the department is independently investigating the crash, using information gathered from cameras on the R61 route, and police reports.
The high-fatality route forms part of a camera-monitored 70 kilometre stretch, better known as the Average Speed Over Distance network.
The taxi was travelling to Cape Town on Wednesday when it rolled about 50 km outside Aberdeen at around 5am.
Twelve people, including four children, were injured.
