A 40-year-old man is in police custody after being arrested following a botched cash-in-transit robbery at the Mthatha Plaza Shopping Centre.
Captain Anelisa Feni of the Hawks says that at around 2.30pm on Thursday, two Fidelity Security Guards were walking towards their vehicle when they were approached by a man who pointed a firearm at them and instructed them to hand over the money they were carrying.
The guards dropped the money and ran away.
Captain Feni says three other men suddenly appeared and grabbed the cash.
All four suspects then fled in a silver-grey Ford Fiesta, believed to have been hijacked in Mthatha the day before.
She says the men, however, crashed into a shop whilst trying to escape because taxi drivers were blocking their way.
Feni says three suspects managed to exit the vehicle and flee on foot but one remained trapped and was subsequently arrested.
A member from the Hawks who happened to be in the area saw all the commotion and called for backup.
Police recovered an undisclosed amount of money and a handgun.
