A minibus taxi driver was arrested after he hit a pedestrian in North End,
Port Elizabeth on Thursday afternoon.
Nelson Mandela Bay municipality spokesperson Kupido Baron said the taxi driver also ploughed into a bakkie, that crashed into a shop, before fleeing the scene.
A traffic officer gave chase and forced the taxi off the road.
The taxi driver was arrested on suspicion of reckless and negligent driving, leaving the scene of an accident, and driving under the influence.
Ten people, including passengers of the taxi, were taken to several hospitals in the city for treatment.
The accused was remanded in custody at the Mount Road Police Station.
