A total of 144 damaged traffic signals and poles in Nelson Mandela Bay had to be replaced in three years at a cost of more than R1.3m, according to figures provided by the Infrastructure and Engineering Directorate.
This excludes street lighting.
In reply to a question submitted at Thursday's Infrastructure, Engineering and Energy Committee meeting, the Directorate states that the figures cover the period from July 2009 to May last year.
The Directorate states that less than 10% of the damage is reported by those responsible with the majority of the damaged lights and poles being “detected by maintenance staff conducting routine maintenance.
Offenders simply leave the accident scene without reporting damage to municipal property, the Directorate notes, adding that statistics show most collisions occur at night.
It says that no costs for damage have been recovered during the current financial year.
