A 35-year-old taxi driver and his two passengers, both aged 23, are in police custody in Knysna following their arrest on Sunday for the possession of stolen bank cards and fuel valued at R5 600.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies says vigilant members attached to the Knysna Crime Prevention Unit were alerted about possible illicit activities at a local petrol station involving a Toyota Quantum minibus taxi, with a George registration number.
He says when members arrived at the garage the taxi had already left but was tracked down on the N2 highway at Sedgefield at about 1 am.
Sergeant Spies says on searching the vehicle, the members found 13 plastic 25-litre containers filled with petrol as well as five fuel cards from various Banks hidden underneath a seat.
When the occupants could not account for the possession of the items they were arrested.
The three suspects, who are believed to be from Thembalethu in George, will make their first court appearance on Monday where they will be charged with fraud and possession of stolen property.
Police say the origin of the Bank cards will form part of the investigation.
