A Tar-like substance flowing into the Knysna Lagoon through a stormwater drain this week has had local residents up in arms.
Concerned residents noticed the fluid flowing into the lagoon through a stormwater drain along the local industrial area on Monday and reported what they believe could be industrial pollution to local authorities.
Knysna municipal manager Lauren Waring said the municipality's environmental management department visited the site and had taken water samples for testing to determine the nature of the substance.
"The outcome of the tests will determine the nature of action to be taken. It is, however, not suspected to be industrial in nature and is not suspected to pose a threat to the lagoon," Waring said.
An investigation into the source of the pollution is also underway. By 5pm on Monday the unidentified substance had stopped flowing.
The matter has been reported to the Department of Water Affairs which deals with any incident relating to water pollution in terms of the National Water Act.
