A R250 000 swimming project for previously disadvantaged schools was officially launched in Mdantsane on Wednesday.
The Nojubalaza Swimming Project, which has been running since September last year, is aimed at providing much needed swimming skills in Mdantsane to curb the drowning of children in the local river.
Hemingways Casino's Mike Vermaak handed over the money for the project to Sascoc president, Gideon Sam.
Sam said the swimming pool facilities in Mdantsane have been disintegrating over the last ten years.
He says building new pools would cost several millon rand, which the municipality doesn't have, therefore portable pools are ideal.
"The purpose of this project here is part of a process of revitalising sport in schools in Mdantsane. We decided to start with 20 primary schools and today we're putting in the first phase of that youth programme that we are going to do here," he said.
