The four Eastern Cape hospital bosses who were given letters of suspension last Wednesday, have until tomorrow to respond to the province's Health Department.
Department spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo, said the CEO's and Nursing service managers at the Butterworth and Madwaleni hospitals are under investigation.
He said this was because foetuses had been kept for more than 12 hours at Madwaleni Hospital, which had been a pattern since 2012.
Kupelo said Butterworth Hospital is also under investigation because corpses had left in wards for too long and that last June the hospital had allowed a private funeral parlour to remove the body of a person without informing the deceased's family.
The dead body was then kept at the funeral palour for almost a year then returned to hospital without informing the next of kin.
"This is part of the on-going investigation that has been instituted by department. When an allegation of this level, you remain innocent until proven guilty and once you are found guilty it will be up to the presiding officer or the chairperson of a disciplinary process, it will depend on what they recommend then the department will act accordingly" he said.
Kupelo added that the names of managers could not be revealed as the matter is an internal disciplinary matter.
The funeral parlour is also under police investigation.
