Three men are expected to appear in an Eastern Cape court on Monday for being in the possession of explosives as well as unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene has hailed the arrest of the three on Friday near Mpantu Bridge at Port St Johns.

Police spokesperson, Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana, said SAPS members were conducting a roadblock on the R61 road between Lusikisiki and Port St Johns when they stopped a white Toyota Corolla.

He said upon searching the vehicle police found “three explosives and two firearms hidden inside the car.”

Kinana said ballistic tests will be done on the firearms to determine if they were used in any crimes while the make and origin of the explosives has yet to be established.

The men, age between 20 and 30, will appear in the Port St Johns Magistrate Court.

"I thank my members for their vigilance and swift response. These dangerous weapons could have been used to take away lives. Let the suspects provide us with more information on their motives," said Lieutenant-General Mene.
