Suspects open fire at PE cops patroling city’s northern areas

Eastern Cape were investigating a case of attempted murder after suspects opened fire at South African Police Service members travelling in a police vehicle in Port Elizabeth’s northern areas on Monday.

Members from the Visible Gang Intervention Unit were busy paroling the streets when two suspects opened fire towards the vehicle’s direction.

At the time police were travelling in Chamois street in Helenvale.

A bullet went through the windscreen of the police vehicle but no one was injured.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, confirmed the incident and said that police members returned fire at the suspects who then fled the scene on foot. No arrests have been made.

Meanwhile, a similar incident occurred in Bethelsdorp when suspects allegedly opened fire in the direction of a police vehicle over the weekend. Police members were patrolling the area and passing shacks near Vastrap when the incident occurred.

No injuries were reported. Naidu could however not confirm the weekend incident.

Meanwhile Two known Port Elizabeth gangsters charged with murdering a man in an apparent revenge attack, will have to wait until later this week to know whether they will be released on bail.

Deilon Makoppa and Kurt Bosman are applying for bail in the PE Magistrate’s Court.

A third accused Damian Kammies has abandoned his bid for bail as he still has two pending cases of murder against his name.

The three are accused of killing two people and kidnapping a third in December last year.

The men appeared briefly in court yesterday where the matter was postponed because the magistrate was not ready to make her ruling
