Suspects on the run following CIT robbery in eQonce

supplied

The Hawks are investigating Tuesday's dramatic incident on the N2 near eQonce where there was an attempt to rob a cash-in-transit vehicle.

The security vehicle and the car used by the robbers to ram the cash truck caught alight after the collission.

Hawks spokesperson, Captain Yolisa Mgolodela, says no money was taken as the explosive device used failed to detonate.

She says a guard sustained an ankle injury as he fled the burning security vehicle, while a Mercedes Benz was destroyed.

When rescue personnel arrived on the scene, the occupants of the vehicle had already fled.

Mgodolea says they are searching for a Ford Ranger bakkie.

The MEC for Transport Xolile Nqata condemned the incident especially since the latest crime stats showed an increase in CIT robberies.
