Warning issued after infant is snatched from shopping trolley in Northern Areas

The unthinkable thought of losing your child while shopping was all too real for a Nelson Mandela Bay family whose infant was snatched from a shopping trolley on Monday.

Police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says a couple was shopping at the Cash and Carry store in Cleary Park at about 2 pm when their child was snatched by a woman, while they were looking at kitchen appliances.

She says it is alleged that a female walked up to the child and touched it before another woman snatched the child away.

Colonel Naidu said when the father noticed his child was gone, he ran to security, who was about to close the doors.

The first female suspect pointed towards the second female who claimed to have been joking with the parents.

Colonel Naidu says police were summonsed to the scene and a case of kidnapping is under investigation.

Two women aged 51 and 54 were arrested and will appear in court soon.
