A woman and her husband who is the director of a local funeral parlour will appear in court on Thursday on a charge of money laundering and theft.

The 44-year-old Margaret Matebese and her husband Ntsikilelo will appear in court with their three co-accused for allegedly stealing money from a Nedbank client.

Hawks Eastern Cape spokesperson, Captain Yolisa Mgolodela, says it is alleged that in December 2020 an amount of R500 000 from a Nedbank client was stolen, R200 000 of that money was paid into the account of her husband's business account, Matabese Funerals.

She says it is alleged that on the following day the Matabese couple withdrew R160 000 which caught the Bank's attention who raised the alarm.

Mgolodela says the Bank immediately froze the account of Matabese Funerals and could only recover R40 000.

She says the investigation led them to a Bank employee, 32-year-old Siyamthanda Nxwusana and two businessmen, 27-year-old Abongile Mhlomi and 37-year-old Gcinithemba Msana who were also arrested.

All five accused are out on bail of R5 000 and it is expected that a trial date will be set at the New Law Courts on Thursday.
