Seven suspects appeared in the Mount Ayliff Magistrate's Court on Monday in connection with the Christmas Day clashes between men from two villages.
National police spokesperson, Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo, said they face at least eight counts of murder.
They were detained after being admitted to hospital with injuries sustained during clashes between men from Mpheni and Nokhatshiles Villages early on Christmas Day.
Eight people were left dead in the aftermath while at least six others sustained injuries.
Police reinforcements were sent to the area while a search for more suspects was being conducted with the support of the SANDF.
Naidoo said all seven suspects, aged between 23 and 53, were remanded in custody until 4 January when they are expected to apply for bail.
