A 41-year-old man will be back in the Zwelitsha Magistrate’s Court next week for the continuation of his bail application in a multi-million rand fraud case involving the Department of Education.
Owen James was arrested in Johannesburg in early February following a police investigation into alleged fraudulent transactions in the Eastern Cape Department of Education.
These transactions amounted to just over R3 million and were reported to the police at Zwelitsha, a decade ago.
The Hawks subsequently took over the investigation.
Captain Lloyd Ramovha says that following James’ arrest, 56-year-old Moses Luthuli was apprehended in Richards Bay in KZN last Friday the 22nd of May.
James and Luthuli are accused of being part of a syndicate that attached keyloggers to computers at the Department's finance section where they retrieved people's usernames and passwords.
Keyloggers are used by hackers to record the strokes people make on their keyboards in order to obtain sensitive information like passwords.
They allegedly paid money into several different bank accounts making a total of 14 fraudulent transactions.
The monies were allegedly paid to four local schools who were listed as beneficiaries.
Luthuli was subsequently granted bail of R2000 and is expected back in court on the 23rd of July.
Captain Ramovha says more arrests are imminent.
