Two men accused of the illegal possession of abalone worth R1.4 million have been granted bail of R5 000 each in the PE Magistrate’s Court.
The 33-year-old Moses Gqola and 21-year-old Shaakir George will be back in court with their four co-accused on the 27th of July.
Their co-accused, 25-year-old Athenkosi Bidla, 45-year-old Eldrich Aylward, 25-year-old Justin Killian and 30-year-old Justin Jantjies were each granted R5 000 bail by the same court on the 22nd of June.
NPA Regional Spokesperson Anelisa Ngcakani says the six have been charged with unlawful possession of abalone and being in possession of prohibited fishing gear.
George has also been charged with reckless driving.
The six were arrested on the 8th of June following a high-speed chase with police through the streets of Central.
Their VW Caddy was driving on the wrong side of Strand Street in the CBD and was eventually stopped by police.
Inside, police found 1 689 units of abalone as well as fishing gear packed inside the vehicle.
