East London police have arrested two men in connection with the theft of taps and water meters in the Buffalo City Metro.
Police spokesperson, Captain Mluleki Mbi, says police responded to information about someone tampering with municipal water meters around Baysville on Wednesday and arrested a 27-year-old man who was found in possession of a water meter as well as drugs.
He said the further investigation led police to a scrap dealer in Southernwood, where the suspect allegedly sells his loot.
"More water meters and taps were recovered from this dealership and the owner, a 22-year-old man, was arrested for the possession of the suspected stolen property," Mbi said.
He added that the two will appear in court on Friday.
Meanwhile, Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality has welcomed the arrests following a spate of incidents in recent months.
Municipality spokesperson, Samkelo Ngwenya, said that 100 incidents were reported since February with "14 incident recorded last weekend", causing the Metro to lose thousands of litres of water.
He said the city had also opened cases against the two suspects.
